History of Genre Development

  • First genre of film was Drama and example would be the story of the Kelly gang
  • The sci-fi genre became popular in the 1920s
  • Musicals went out of style in the mid 1980s
  • Horror movies became popular in the 1960s with films such as psycho, night of the living dead and little shop of horrors
  • There has been a major improvement in technology which means there is more realism in science fiction films today. For example, writer and director James Cameron had originally planned to start filming Avatar in 1997. However, he was forced to wait until the technology needed to make Pandora come alive was created.
  • Animated films became popular in the 1990s.
  • The first animated films were Disney films such as Snow white and the seven dwarves, Dumbo and Bambi.
  • The western genre has decreased most in production.
  • The silent era: Oliver Twist, Cleopatra and A woman of paris
  • The studio era: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The wizard of Oz and The mask of zoro
  • The rise of independents: To kill a mocking bird, The sound of music and breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • New Hollywood era: Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, Carrie and Grease
